Generative engine optimization, defined

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your brand, products, and point of view appear accurately and favorably inside AI-generated answers. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is a closely related and often interchangeable term, with roots in the featured-snippet era. LLM SEO is shorthand many practitioners use for the same thing. The acronyms differ. The work overlaps.

The clearest way to think about it. SEO optimizes the page so a person finds it. GEO optimizes the page so a model cites it. Both still matter. The weighting between them is shifting fast.

The buyer journey shift: from Google to ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode

Three patterns are now consistent across B2B categories I've audited.

First, early-stage research has moved inside the model. Buyers ask "what are the best vendors for X" or "how does Y compare to Z" inside ChatGPT or Claude before they ever open a search tab. Recent industry surveys put the share of B2B buyers using generative AI somewhere in the upper range — Gartner, Forrester, and Bain have all published numbers in the 60-to-80 percent zone for at least exploratory use.

Second, Google's own Search experience has become a generative experience. Google AI Mode and the AI Overviews are not optional surfaces. For many high-intent queries, the AI answer is the answer, and the ten blue links are below the fold or behind a click.

Third, Perplexity has emerged as a meaningful B2B research tool, especially for technical and financial buyers, because it cites sources by default and is fast enough to feel like a search engine.

The combined result. A material share of your category's pipeline is being shaped before the buyer hits your site. If you are not in the answer, you are not in the consideration set.

What LLMs actually cite, and why

LLMs lean on a few consistent signals when they choose what to cite or paraphrase.

Authority. Wikipedia, government and regulatory sources, established industry publications, peer-reviewed research, and brand sites with strong domain reputation dominate citations. For financial services topics, the Federal Reserve, NCUA, CFPB, FDIC, and Filene Research show up constantly because their content is structured, dated, and reliable.

Structure. Models pull from content that is easy to extract. FAQ sections under FAQPage schema, clean Article schema, well-organized H2s with declarative subheadings, and short answer-shaped paragraphs all increase the probability of being cited.

Originality. Models are biased toward content that introduces a distinctive idea, framework, or number. Generic restatements of common knowledge get summarized away. Distinctive frameworks get attributed.

Citation graph. The web of references between authoritative sources is doing the work it has always done in SEO, only now amplified. Being referenced by Wikipedia, by an industry analyst, by a regulator, or by a peer-reviewed source dramatically improves citation probability.

The audit framework: how to measure your LLM visibility

The LLM visibility audit is the foundation. Without it, GEO work is improvisation.

Start with prompts, not keywords. Build a list of 30 to 60 prompts that mirror the actual questions a buyer in your category would ask an AI assistant at each stage of the journey. Awareness prompts. Comparison prompts. Implementation prompts. Objection-handling prompts. The prompts should reflect how buyers talk, not how your team writes briefs.

Run those prompts across the four major surfaces — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode — and capture the full responses. Repeat at least twice per prompt to surface variability.

Score on three dimensions for each response.

  • Mention. Are you mentioned by name in the answer? In which position?
  • Context. Are you described correctly? Are the products, capabilities, and positioning accurate?
  • Sentiment. Is the description neutral, favorable, or reluctant? Are there qualifiers ("a smaller player," "limited to") that are quietly hurting you?

GEO tactics that actually move the score

The tactics that move LLM visibility cluster into a small, defensible set.

Original frameworks with distinctive names. If you publish a five-stage framework for AI readiness in credit unions, with a distinctive name, in a structured, citable post, models will start to attribute it to you. Generic content does not earn attribution.

FAQ content under FAQPage schema. Every important page should have an FAQ block, with the questions answered crisply, and the FAQPage schema should match the visible content word-for-word. This single change measurably improves citation probability across all four major models.

Named-entity density. Pages should reference the specific regulators, vendors, frameworks, and named experts that anchor your category. Models lean on entity recognition, and pages that name the right entities are more likely to be pulled into answers about those entities.

Authoritative backlinks. The link economy still matters. Earning citations from Wikipedia, industry analysts, regulators, and peer-reviewed sources is the highest-leverage GEO investment.

Structured data everywhere. Article, Organization, Person, Product, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList. The schema is increasingly the way models understand what your page is.

Original numbers. Distinctive, citable numbers — even illustrative ones, properly labeled — get attributed and re-used. Generic prose gets summarized away.

Why traditional SEO is not GEO

The overlap is real. Quality content matters in both. Structured data matters in both. Backlinks matter in both. The differences are also real, and they matter.

Traditional SEO optimizes for clicks. GEO optimizes for citations. A page can rank number two on Google and still be invisible in the AI answer if the model prefers a more structured source ranking number nine. The reverse is also true. An obscure page with great structure and a strong original framework can dominate the AI answer for a category while ranking modestly on traditional search.

SEO rewards length and depth. GEO rewards extractability. The page that ranks well and gets cited well in 2026 has both a long, authoritative body and a series of short, answer-shaped passages the model can pull verbatim.

SEO competition is largely keyword-based. GEO competition is question-based and entity-based. Two companies competing for the same keyword can both lose the AI answer to a third company that owns the entity.

Where this is going: agentic commerce and the next surface

Generative search is the first half of the shift. Agentic commerce is the second half.

Within 24 months, AI agents will not just summarize answers — they will compare vendors, shortlist options, and in some categories complete transactions on the buyer's behalf. The early signs are already visible in consumer travel, in software procurement, and in financial services research.

The brands that win that phase will not be the ones with the loudest brand campaigns. They will be the ones whose product information, pricing, capability documentation, trust signals, and customer evidence are structured, machine-readable, and internally consistent. Common GEO mistakes B2B teams keep making

Three patterns repeat across every B2B audit I've run.

First, mistaking AI Overviews placement for full GEO coverage. Showing up in Google's AI Overview is one signal. The same query in ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity often produces a completely different answer with a different cast of characters. Coverage means coverage across all four major surfaces, not one.

Second, treating GEO as a content-team problem. The work spans content, technical SEO, public relations, analyst relations, and product marketing. The page that gets cited has the right schema, the right entities, the right backlinks, and the right framework — and that requires four functions to coordinate. Putting it on the content team alone guarantees underperformance.

Third, optimizing for vanity prompts. Searching "best [your category] vendors" and being thrilled when the model lists you is interesting. Searching the actual prompts your buyers ask — about specific pain points, integrations, pricing models, regulatory implications — is where the real picture appears. Build the prompt set from buyer interviews, not from a brainstorm.

Run the audit. Fix the three categories of findings. Publish the frameworks you are uniquely positioned to own. Make every important page machine-extractable. Earn citations from the authorities that matter in your category.
